» (By Telegraph.) AUCKLAND, January 18. James Bird, a labourer, committed suicide by hanging himself to a cross beam m a water closet. No cause is assigned. He leaves a wife and grownup family. At the inquest a verdict was returned that he committed suicide while temporarily insane. The s.a. Ohau, from Fiji, reports a destructive hurricane on January 7th and Bth. Great damage was done to property at Suva, Lev'uka arid elsewhere. Many native villages were wiped out. The barque Ophir was wrecked and several small craft lost. At the annual meeting of the Costley Training Institution, the report showed that there were 31 boys and 9 girls m the foundation, that 8 boys are at the school, and the rest apprenticed, and that the girls are at service.
