THE PRESBYTERY OF TIMARU
The Presbyteiy of Timaru met on Tuesday last at 11 a.m. at Timaru. Present — Revs. J. White (moderator), W. Gillies, J. Dickson, W. J. Comrie, and A. B. Todd, and Messrs Thos, Morrison, P. W. Hutton, G. Goldie, and S. McCully (elders). An apology was received for the absence of Rev. M. Kelly. On the motion of Mr Todd, seconded by Mr Diokson, the following motion was passed unanimously : — " That the Presbyteiy record th ir deep regret at the death of Mr John Cuthbert (elder) and their sense of the loss sustained by the congregation of Timaru to which he belonged, and by the presbytery, of which he was frequently a Member. In him the cause of presbyterianiam has lost a true friend, and the Christian church an earnest worker and zealous advocate. The Presbytery expresses sympathy with the bereaved family and friends, and with the congregation m which he held office. A copy of this minute to be sent to them." The Revs. W, J. Comrie and W. Gillies, and Mr P. W. Hutton were appointed delegates to the meeting of assembly m Auckland m February, and also any other elder who can find it convenient to go. It was agreed to visit the congregation of Timaru on 9th April, and that at Pleasant Point m October, a conference to be held m connection with the visitation at Tiniaru. An application was received from the congregation at Mackenzie Country for permission to mortgage the church property at Fairlie if necessary, for the purpose of paying the balance of purchase money of the same. The Presbyteiy expressed its gratification at the settlement of the matter at Fairlie, and the conveyance of the property to the Presbyterian Church, and sanctionced the application. Mr Gillies reported that the Rev. Mr McNeil had visited Timaru at the end of November last, and held a meeting m the church. He also mentioned that Dr Lamb was to sail from the Old Country for New Zealand on January 12th. Mr Todd also mentioned that his brother, Mr James Todd, who was on his way to China to work m the China mission, had visited Geraldine the previous week and held a meeting m the church . He stated also "that friends m New Zealand had undertaken to support his work m China.
