The Consols Bill was read a first time. ; XAHD FOE BBTTLEM.KNTS BILL. The Land for Settlements Bill was re* • committed on a division by 23 to 8. In olanee 8—" Compulsory taking of land," the following proviso was inierted :—" Pro- > vidod that tuch section may bp composed of flret olaae, eecond class, and pastoral land, and that the area selected shall bs so deter* mined that the acreage of each olass shall not I exceed proportionately tha prescribed maxit tnum-" Mr Bowen moved a new clause, its effect being that no land shall be taken oompulsorily until the County Counoil or Koad Board interssted bos reported as to its suitt ability. . • t A division resulted in a tie, the voting being— aye* 16, noes 16. Tho Chairman gave his casting vote with the noe«, and deolared tjjo clause lost. A new clause was added to the Bjll, to fhe \ effeot that nothing in the Act ehft.ll authorise v the compulsory purohase of laods whioh have 5 been set apait as endowments or reserves.
