Bees has deoided, at the request of his family, to give up politics, and is unlikely again to stand for Parliament. OHRISTOHUROH, August 14. A fatal aooident ocourrcd on the New Brighton tram yesterday afternoon, the victim being a young man named Fred. Benner, eon of the proprietor of the Kaikoura Star. It appears that he with others was standing on the book platform of the front car ; on rounding •> sharp ourve Benner let go his hold on the rail and struck a match to light a cigarette ; Laving no support a jerk of the car threw him off, and m endeavouring to save himself he caught hold ot the rail, and was thrown between two carriages, the result being that the wheels went over him before the tram oould bs stopped. The injuries be received were of a shooking character, His left arm waa severely mangled, the shoulder blade crushod and collar bone brokon, and several ribs were fractured. He was taken to the hospital and the arm amputated at the shoulder. He rallied somewhat about 8 o'olook, but gradually began to sink and died at 12.30. Deceased wan apparently about 22 years of age. DDNEDIN, August 14 A first attempt to arrest a fugitive debtor by means of » telegraphio warrant proved futile, the absoonder having done " the Pacific slope " on Saturday. The Upper Waipori dredge reports 44 ounoes for five days dredging ; Sew Hoy 59 ounces retorted ; JDnoedin Dredge Company 62 ounces for five days.
