An erect of some importanoe m the meat trade of London, was the recent arrival there of a ehipment of chilled beef from the Biver Plate, the first from that quarter which baa arrived m any but the frozen state. The experiment was not entirely satisfactory, some of the meat being frozen hard and part of the cargo damaged. A portion, however, realised a penny per pound more than the highest price obtainable for frozen beef of the same description. A curious caie was heard by tyfr Justice Math ew m Lqndon recsntlv. A man wsie committed at one of the London polioe courts for a ftlony, but admitted to bail. In due cqu«e a surety presented, himself, R*ve hi« name and addrevs, produoed his rent-book, and was acoepted. The acpused did not appear to lake his trial at th« appointed time A distress warrant was issued against the suroly, and as there were not at the address given sufficient goods to cover the amount of bail, a person who lived at the address given and whose name corresponded to that given by the surety was attached and imprisoned. The man who was thus deprived of bis liberty was very poor and almost illiterate. He protested that he bad never gono bail for anybody or attended at any polioo court for this or any other purpose ; but, as his name aad address corresponded exactly with' the name and address on the committal order, the sheriff's officer could only do h,i« duty. After the poor fellow had been deprived, of his liberty for more than a month, his story was told to big employers, a large firm of bpot manufacturers, who generously instructed their solicitor to take the matter up, with the result that he, was discharged from prison on a wpit af habeas oorpus Mother (*t a ball) : Ara you enjoying yourself, dear ? Daughter : No, I'm not. What is the matter ? I've refused George six dances running, and he doesn't seem miserable a bit.
