GATHERING AT SORBOURNE. Parih, Dec. 27.
There was a great gathering, at Sorbourne to-day to celebrate the 70th birthday of M. Louis Pasteur. The President, M. Carnot, several members of the Senate and Chamber of Deputies, as well as a number of foreign representatives of science, attended. FAILED TO GO OFF. A dynamite cartridge, found m the precincts of the late Baron Reinach'B house, failed to explode. THE UMBRIA. Nkw York, Dec. 27. The Cunard line Ucnbria is two days overdue, and grave anxiety for her safety ia felt, owing to the severe gales reported m the Atlantic ocean.

New York, Dec. 27. The etuigrani-8 who have not been welcomed m the -United States are flooding into Mexico and the latter country has despatched agenta to Ireland, Germany, Italy, and Sweden with a view to discouraging the people from emigrating. ANOTHER TRAGEDY. A terrible tragedy is reported from Worcester, m Massachusetts where a man killed his wife, mother-in-law, and 'daughter, white asleep, by scattering their brains with an iron bar. The man is said to have been ioaane owing to inability to secure work, and after he committed the murders stabbed himself m the breast and died from the injuries inflicted.
FAMINE.
Sr. Petersburg, Dec. 2< . A terrible famine is being experienced m North Finland, and the only food hundreds of the poorer class have to subsist on is bread mixed with powdered bark. The Russian Government are mtiking only meagre efforts ao relieve the distress, and it is stated that fully two thousand are m quite a destitute condition. SHIPPING CASUALTIES. The Atlantic liners have arrived covered with ice, and with compa.iaes frozen. The steamer Nordland broke down during a gale, and was drifting hopelessly about the ocean, when her position was observed by a passing steamer and she waß towed into Queenstown. Tbe steamer Isam, bound from Cardiff to Bombay, has gone ashore at Cape Trafalgar, on the Spanish coast, and it is feared that she will become a total wreck. The crew were saved. The loss is eatiimated at £70,000.
