IMPLEMENTS.

Compared with previous yeara there ie a marked increase m implements, and tbe ixvurd committee, whose business it is to take into consideration any improvements m the implements or machinery wbi.b may bo brought under their notioe by makers, will have no easy task. To-day enteral of ths implements will be shown m i-iolion, and this will add nre j tiy to a branoh of the show which has always been most popul ir with visitors. The well-known colonial makers, Messrs Reid and Gray, who we are glad to learn have of late greatly extended their connection with the sisler colonies, bare the No. 1 stand, and tbey make a splendid show. In addition to a display of their usual wellfinished implements which are m common use, they have three or four specialities. One is a sol of 8 feet digging barrows, similar m construction to disc harrowe, with tho exception tbat tbe discs are notched imtead of being continuous. Another new thing is tbo rotary barrow, which is t c latest and besl implement m existence for cleaning foul land infested with couoh graßS or other weeds and mokes a first-class pulveriser, olodcrueher and leveller. The firm show four styles m grain drills, their special drill is adjustable and will manipulate grain and manure or turnips and manure. Since taking over the Meroer binder, the now well known Canadian implement, the firm have spar, d no effort to b-om the invention, with the result that ordors hare been largely received. In addition to being io the f rout rank of reapers and binders, all canvas has been successfully done away with, and this m itself unrko a most distinct advance. Tbe Mercer has a close cut, tbe draught is light, the re.l liob a large adjustable scope and two speeds, and the machine on the whole is etrongly yet lightly built. To-day tbe firm will have another special machine m motion, and farmers and others should not fail to sco it. We may odd that a specimen of their farm drays is also well worth looking over, being wonderfully strong and highly finished. Mr M.'.villg Gray bas the Brantford' binder on No, 2 staud, and a speoial exhibit of Fison's fertilizer, which an expert will tell farmers ie the only thing wanted to double the yield of all kinds of orops. A new reaper, the MossovHarris, is also on tbis stand, and m these days of progress by " leaps and bounds " tbe new machina is sure to find plenty of admirers. It has three oanvasses, and can be opened or dosed at tho baok at will. Special patents are the header board, buttor and floating elevator oanvas, and the simplest and surest knotter ever put ou tbe market is claimed for it. An engine is situated olose by, and the binder will be driven by it, so that ill wi'l !~.ayo on opportunity of seeing it doing everything but outting. In tho Walter A. Wood machines, Messrs Guinness . end I.eOreo, hare four exhibits, but as the speoial features of these have already been spoken of it is not necessary to more than state bere thaf they sre well worthy of looking over. Chriat.hijrph friends m Messrs P. and DDuncan, _Ibo make a yery brave show, a couple of doublo furrow ploughs having noval and useful attachments ; whihf; iii drills there it guile a bowildering number to choose from*— 2 row drills up ta 17 row drills ijtnd ao on ; capubl. of handling turnips nnd manuro, ,nd a .penal one fit led with a grass need hox. Homo |>oep, rake., Gfadßtone frame switch harrows, elc, make up quito a first. clasß cxliibilion. Mossrs __oolh ui]d McDonald, another Cathedral oity firm, lire also well lo tbe fore ; and have o Bpecial sot of .p. ding barrows, slightly different m make and sot to those ghown by Messrs Reid and Gray. Other .podiflilios ..rp » -ffopl press and a " Bee " thatoh making rnach jne, Hie latter m face of recant lessons should CQine into very general use. Messrs Andrews and Beay'an oome up smiling again with their now famous " Canterbury " obsffoutters j but what claims the lion's sharp of attention is tbeir seed cleaner mode oq the most approved pattern. This was opt m motion yesterday, but a good many samples of teed wore shown by tbe at tendunt as having been oleaned by the machine and judging by tbe beautifully bright appearance of these the machine undoubtedly does first olass work. Messrs Priest and Holdg .te oome next, the " only McOormicks " * and they make a special feature of the popu, lar reaper and binder, and also tho mower. The former has long ago been bo complete that it invariably olaims great attention j . while the mower is a most useful implement. I Planet Junior tools oan be puft to euoh a multitude of useful jobs that the wonder is , that apy farmer or agriculturist can do without tiiDta; while Howard's ond Marshall's , goods are of '.}}** sterling quality that they should be at leost inepectea by every visitor. Small stands are . those of Messrs Bedoll, manure drill, Dpnag)jy and Hale, binder | twine, and" F. Hatton, spoyei j tjjp hjtfeer \ from a looal domestic point of view should , certainly be seen. New exhibitors ore Messrs i j. W. Blackwood, and T.'Fergusson and Co. , Tho letter's exhibit* were not on the ground . I yesterday, .hut mo^ be to-day. Mrßlaokwood

[shows a strong, well appoinlod and got up I farm dray aid frame ; al»o harrowß, rollor, (and horso hoe j all well made ond strongly i put together. The Canterbury Farmers show tho Hornsby Binders, Btool and wood frames, one of eaoh (particulars of which wore published a day or two ago) ; ond tho open buck binder should find great favour. The comparatively little known etrawsoniser, and one or two minor exhibits fill up tho stand. Mei-Brs Grandi and Co., the well known coachbuildorß, oro to the fore again, with a firßt c a«s chow of vehicles ; ull of which have boen mado to order, for nowadoye m the absence of decent prizes it is hardly worth a firm's while to mako up a vohiole for e-hibition with the chance of, perhaps, losing monoy on it. Their Whitoohapel oarts ore well finished ; but it ib a ruslic cart m honoyeuchlo that will bit tbs taßto of the minority of sightseers. The honeysuckle panels m this are very pretty, and the whole appointments of tho cart are of that order which is found to give the i>roa!ett satisfaction. A park phaeton -ia a marvel of tbe amith's art m neat ironwork ; and the pointing and upholstering of all the vehicles is excellent. A butcher's ordor cart, mado for a Timaru firm, will also bo on view to-day, and wn aro asßured .tint it will claim great attention. Mr D. Sturrock ie tbe next m line, und the chief implement ho has is one of Nicholas's patent disc harrows and eeed sowers. The attachment to tho sower has a tlanee almost touching the diso harrow, and ac a result of this the sower does not ohoke up on rough ground j there is no trouble with pipes ooming out, or coulters catching on tufts of grass or clods, and leaving the seed on tho surface. The implement it particularly good for those who wish to have their ground woll worked and the seed sown evenly. His garden ploughs aro handy and strong ; the combined grubber and ridging plough is excellent ; and an improvement m harrows is a squuro neck to tho tines, co that they will not, as m Ihe ordibary round nocked lines, turn while being worked. Other stands ore Mr Jamts Fmdlay's Deering binder, Messrs Minchin and O'Hara's protection for horses from the bpt fly, Manning's steam engine (Marshall's) and the Alexander cream separator, as shown by Mr 0. W. MulliDS. Tbe eplendid show made by tbe vehicles and implements is suro lo be fully appreciated to-day, aad thoso m charge of thorn should be kept busy for some hours. One of tbe most curious stones m tbe world it found* m Finland, where it oocure m many places. It is a natural barometer, and actually foretells probable ohange9 m Ibe weather. It is called eemakuir, and turns blaok shortly before an approaching rain, while m fine weather it is mottled with spots of white. For a long time this curious phenomenon was a mystery, but an analysis of the etooe shows it to be a fossil mixod with clay and containing a portion of rock salt and nitre. Thiß fact being known, the explanation was easy- The salt, absorbing the moisturo, turned black when the conditions were favourable for rain, while the dryness of Ihe atmosphere brought out the salt from the intorior of the otone m while spots ou the surface. — Globe Democrat.
