<j) (By TELKaBAPH. ) WELLINGTON, Feb. 3. Tbo twelfth i-i-ion of the General Synod of the Church ul uio Provinoe of New Zoaland wsb opened this aftomoon. Amongst tha delegates are the Primate, the Bishops of Chriotciiurch, Aucklund, Wmapu, and Dunedin, Dean Jacobs and Dean Hovell, Archdeacons Harper, Fancourt, Clarke, Dudley, L. Williams, 8. Williams, Mule*, and Malcolm. In bis address, which was of considerable length, the Primate alluded to the absence of Bishop Suter and Bishop Solwyn from this mooting of the Synod, and expressed his deop rcgrot at tho circumstances which prevented tbeir attendance. With regard to Bishop Selwyn Hia Lordship mentioned that he had received a letter from him, m which he said that ua two distinguished surgeons iv London bad distinctly stated tbeir opinion that he oould never again bo fit for the work he had been engaged m, he had (though he did co m much sorrow) forwarded his resignation of tbe Biahoprio of Melanesia. After dealing exhaustively with early church history and theetato of tho canon laws, His Lordship passed on to the question of the establishment of a Theological College for the whole province. He held that if the Anglican Church were to oducate her own clergy, and it was becoming every day more evident that this must be done, means must bo afforded to students of obtaining moderate scholarship hoi., m his opinion the establishment of a Theological College for tho whole province waß urgently needed. Hia Loidship observed that attempts, had recently been made m Parliament to facilitate divorce, and he feared that the Church could not bring any influence to boar upon the State that was at all likely to arrest tbo exton°ion of tho existing demoralising law on this subject. He said ho had long hold that divorce, implying liberty to marry another, was not justifiable ; m fact, it was absolutely forbidden by the Word of God. Touching on the education system he said that bo must express his fear that tho result of onr present system would, if persevered m, prove injurious to the well-beiDg of the colony. In tbe present circumstances he could aeo no other course than to muke every possible effort to estublish church tebools. Referring to Church work among tbe Maoris, he expressed regret (hat moro iuterest was nob taken m the religious condition of tho original population of these islands. In closing bis addresa Hia Lordship informed the Synod that be hud recoived from a majority of the atandiog committees of the dioceses the. confirmation of the Venerable Archdeacon Muleß* nomination to the See of Nelson. Archdeacon Harpor gave notice to move — " That, m the opinion of tbia Synod, it is deairablo that, the Education Act ahould be amended co as to contain a provision for grants m uid of the maintenance of schools set on foot by any religious denomination, provided that the secular instruction given m auch schools shall came up to the required standards and satisfy tho Government Inspeo- ] tors ; and further that the Legislature be petitioned to the foregoing effect."
