MR SEDDON AT NELSON.
(By TBIESBiPH.)
Oox 14,
The foundation stone oil the new Oddfellows' Hall was laid this afternoon by the mayor, Mr Tra.sk. Among tbe speakers wag Mr Seddon, who had ju»t orrived from Wai- j HogtoD. Ho epohe highly of the principles and objects or friendly sooitjties, and etrees was laid on bis utterance that the Government would allow no legi»lation that had for 1 its object an injurious effect on tho prosont friendly societies. Ea did not think it wise for the Government to take up tbo work now
done by these sooieties, and the Goyornmont should restriot itself to watching their financial position. This evening Mr Seddon inspected the Volunteers at their monthly parade, and complimented them highly. He eaid the oountry must rely on the Volunteers mainly for its protection, and that it had been resolved by the Government to continue for three years the present rate of capitation, whioh'was low enough. It was: not contemplated to have but two camps next Easter, one for each island, but to mass the volunteers round oach of the four defended port! and organise manoeuvres, m which the vessels of the auxiliary squadron might take part. Bo far ss the west coast of this island was concerned, na Nelson was midway between Marlbarough and the West Coast, he thought it would be a convenient position for a camp. He would, however, consult Major Bsnac and the other officers before a decision was arrived at.
