AUCKLAND, Oct. 14.

At the meeting of tho South British Insurance Company to day the report previously telegraphed declaring a 10 par cent., dividend was adopted. 'lho chairman of directors congratulated the shareholders on tho succbbs that had attended the operations of the company under tlje new policy and expressed great confidence m the future Meesra Wilsou and B. A. Carr woro elected directors, m place of Messrs Wilson and Daldy, retiring. Messrs Waymoutb and Clarke wore re elected auditors. Tbo proposal to reduce the nuwber of directors from seven to six was negatived. Tho meeting concluded with a vote of tliunka to the chairman, the directors, the manager, and officers.

OHHIBTOHUSOH, Oct. 14. Tha quarterly communication of the Masonic Grand Lodge of New Zealand was heM for the first time m Christchurch lasfc evening. The B. W.G M. Bro, H. Thompson presided, and thore were ofllcrra present from the North and South Islands, and a large number of visiting brethren. A considerable amount of routine business was transacted, including consideration of the proposed oanstitution. A vote of sympathy was recorded to Bro. B. T. Gillon, G.J.W., m the serious illness which prevented his attendance.

DUNEDISr, Oct. 14. The Government labour agent has up to the present received applications from 405 men for work on the Otago Central railway. William Mathesoo, a ploughman at Otahu StatioD, Waiau district, was thrown from a young horse yesterday and received injuries which proved fatal. His family" reside at Woodend. At the annual meeting of the Drapery Importing Company a dividend of 7i per cent , as against 7 per cent, last year, was doclared ; also a bonus of 4 per cent, on shareholders' purchases. The chairman, Mr Hallenst<nn, took a very hopeful view of the future of the colony.

Strange, coffee merchant, resisted payment because the books were not deliverod, and succeeded, plaintiff being cast m costs. In the case against John Scott, Mr Baweon gave judgment for the defendant on the ground that he had been fraudulently induced to eiga the order. Leave to appeal was refused.
