A MYSTERIOUS DEATH
Wo notico from the Sydney files the sad and mystorioua death on tho Ulawarra Railway lino, at Arucliffo elation, of Commander Albtrt James Lewington ; of. the New Soutb Woleo Naval Brigade, aud managing pirtrior of the firm of Mitchell and Co., shipchandicrs, m Macquarrio Place, for many years. Early on Sunday morning, June 2lst, tho mutilated body of the deceased gentlemao was found on the railway line, near Arncliffe Kailway btation. When the last train from Hurstviilo reached Evcleigh on tho Saturdny night, it appoara that tbe ÜBual examination of tho engino disclosed tho fact that an accident of somo sort had occurred, and search resulted m tho finding of the mutilntcd body of tho gentleman named. How the necident happened ia a mystery. The dcoo.ißcd gentleman resided at Forest Lodgo, ami it is not known huw he came tv bo on tho Ulawarra line, although a (liat-ckes return ticket from Sydney to Hurstviilo was found on the body. On Saturday morning ho uuirio un arrange ment to go to Waverloy, but nothing was said about Hurstviilo. The inauost was adjourned to throw somo light upon tho matter, und his movements after noon on Htiturday, but at tho inquiry on tho let of July, oil that was forthcoming wao the evidonce of Inspector Lookyer, who travelled with decoasod m a smoking curriago of the 10.12 p.m. train lo Huratvillo on June 20th. Tho inspector did not Bpcak to him, and loft the train at Rockdale, and tloceased remained m the train. Tho jury returned a vordict to tbo effect that the doceaßcd died from the effects of injuries recoived through being run over by a railway train ; but how or by what mesne ho cume to bo run ovor tho evidonce adduced did not enable them to any. Commander Lowington was 52 yoarß of age, and wus well kuown m Auckland 30 years ago, and muat be remembered by many old citizens. Ho was born cither at Auckland or Taranaki, and Was a Sunday achool scholar at tho old High street Woaleyon Sunday school. About 30 yoars ago ho left for Sydnoy with his parents, and subsequently married Miss Milohell (and bocamo a membor of tho firm m which he was a managing partner) and whom ho loaves a wi'low with seven children. Deceased was a man of temperate habits. Twenty years ago he joined tho N.S.W. Brigade as sublieutenant and roao m due course to tho rank of commandor. In 1887 ho was electod to a Boat m tho Council of the New South W»lbb Rifle Association, and was ulso on tho executive. His tragic death will be heard of viith regret by many m Auckland to whom the deceased gentleman was personally known, and by whom ho was ..highly esteomed. — New Zealand Herald
