THE SHINGLE QUESTION.

TO THE EDITOR 01? THE TIMARU HERALD. Bib, — As miny liavo had their say on this rather vexed question, will you allow me to udd a few lines. To lay out a lot of money for a plant — speoially constructed engine — would rrquiro engineering skill, and tho built of tho cost of removing the shi-glo 'would necessarily fall into a tew hands, and thoso few would consequently advocate and advise it. But does it not commond itself to any person of common sense that if a tram lino wero laid down tho shingle could bo shifted to the north of the molo and utilised m reclaiming land, and the work could be done by labourors every timo iho shingls accumulated threatoningly, or when there waa a plethora of unemployed labour available m tho district. The money thus earned would ba spent m the district, and be a blossing to ehopkeepnra and labourers, eto., and effectually dispose of the shingle difficulty. Tho land reclaimed would, or perhaps it were bottor to aoy, might repay tho cost of transit of the shingle from south to north. If this plan, combined with that of Mr D. Stuart, wero tried, tho cost would noii be one half of the expensive notion of pumping it into bargeß and taking it to soa, to return ta our shores at ono time or auolhei-. I have watched the shingle on tho Timaru beaoh for tlio last twenty-five years, nnd I feel confident that it need cot cost so very much to disposo of it, or be an insurmountable difficulty. I am, &c , Qeoboe Williams.
