water.and a lavge number of houses m low lying portions are completely submerged. Although the water is falling there are still many houses which are inundated I to the extent of 10 to 15 feet The state schools, churches, and various public halls have been placed at the disposal o£ those rendered homeless. So groat was the excitement m town yesterday that business was entirely suspended. A schooner, name unknown, was aeon to disappear off Sorrento, south-east of Port Phillip Bay, and it is believed that she is lost with all hands. A fireman belonging to a dredge attempted to come ashore m a dingy, and when near Princess Bridge was capsized and drownud. Thousands of people witness ■ 1 the accident but wore powerless to help use unfortunate man. Tugs havo gone to the assistance of the Calcutta steamer Buncoora. which is ashore near Cape Otway. (Keceivod 1.45 a.m., July loth.} The floods are subsiding. A large relief fund is bsing started for the benefit of the sufferers.
