THE REVENUE.
> The Wellington correspondent of the Otagi t Daily Times telegraphs as follows :— Witli t reference to tho revenue returns gazetted to- , night, it may be well I should explain, as on i former occasions, thit the sums shown m the i returns do not represent tho full revenue foi I the half-year, but only for five and a hulf i months, owing to the system of occouut , keeping which practically throws six and k , half months' revouue into the second half , of tho year. Thus, though tho half-year's receipt* i* shown, were only £1,975,479 as againsli ii.i Treasurer's catimalo of £2,052.000, this represents only tho sum actually brought to account m tho Treasury books, while the real receipts are materially m excess, and have more than realised the Treasurer's estimate. For instance, the Customß receipts arc B'nown us £27,000 less than the sum actually collected, and tho railway £16,000 below. The caee is the mime with the other branches, and so instead of tbo revenue being, as shown m the Treasury booka, apparently Bomo £76,000 to the bat l , it is as a matter of fact many thousands to the good Moreover, several largo items— such as the property tax, the Canterbury pastoral rents, and various fees— do not come m till the second half of the year, bo that the whale year promises to show a very good result.
