CORRESPONDENCE.

AN EXPLANATION.

TO THE EDITOR OF THB TISIARU HEBAXD,

Sic, — An advertisement now appearing m jour paper warning tailoro to keep away from my shop m Timaru ia evidently put m for quite another purpose, namely, an attempt to influence the public and injure my business.J |This will ba apparent when I tell you that the matter m dispute is well known to journeymen tailors m Oamaru and Ximaru, and there waa no necessity to make it known by advertisement ; and as it does not appear m other papers outßide theße towns, this inference is con6rmed. This being so, you will perhaps excuse my explaining briefly through jour columns the cause of this dispute. My cotter m Timarn has had great difficulty m getting men to do his work as he wanted it done. Desirouß of finding out tbe cause, and, if possible, getting the workshop properly organised before the busy season set m, my brothor, who has obarge of my workshop m Oamaru, was sent up to Timaru eomo three weeks ago. He was asked by the tailors there to join their society. This, he thought, was unnecessary, as he would only be there for a month. Unfortunately, trade ia quiet ia Timaro, as elsewhere, and the mon wera not getting fall time, and they complained of his working while they were not, and wired mo last Tuesday, threatening to strike tbe shop if he was not stopped working by noon that day. This seemed to mo hasty action, especially as I had m a letter offered to refer the matter for arbitration to any outßide society, and abide by their decision ; also, explaining the reason I had for Bending my brother up. Their threat they carried into execution, and there the matter stands for the present. I have asked the Tailors' society m Oamaru to enquire into the matter, and will submit all correspondence to them. I would not have troubled you writing on the subject only for these advertisements, but m the present excited state of the labour market it is well that the public should know the position m which employers are sometimes placed. I am, &c, Wm. Waddell.
