Tho presentation of diplomas to the graduates of Canterbury College took place this afternoon m tho preoenoe of a large assembly, ohiefly ladies. Professor Cook prosided and gave an address, as did Bishop Julius and Mr J. Hay. The proceedings wore very orderly. Tho following students received diplomat i—M.A.'b, Lilian Harriot Williams, and Mary Jano McLean ; B.A.s, Ernard Marian Anna Krull, Agnes Elizabeth Tindall, Bonjamm Samuel Bull, Thomas Riohard Cresswell, and Curtis Orowlhor Plante.

INVERCARGILTj, August 29.
At Gore Mr Bevell B.M. dismissed a charge of embezzling a ehequo for £351 preferred by Mr BUworth against his 1010 partner Mr I. S. tiimson. The gravamen of tho charge wai that whilo Mr tiimson had the partnership cheque m his possession he was contiuually aßking Mr Kl»worth if it had not come to hand, and finally went toDunodin, exchanged it for other firinis' cheques, paid these into a trust account m his own name, and usod some of tho procoeds. He had, however, paid about £250 m settlement of tho firm's accounts. Tho Resident Magistrate decided that, although Mr Simeon's conduct may have beon injudicious, it did not amount to embezzlement.
A mooting of Civil Servants was hold here tonight, but tho Proes wero not invited, and nothing is yet known of tho proceedings, which wero m the direction of forming a branch.
A 'girl, aged eight years, daughlor of Mrs Penfold, a hard working woman, was killed yesterday afternoon at Ross's Implement factory. The works are nowly erected, and a portion is to be used as a flax-dressing shop. Projecting through the wall is the shafting from which the scrutohers aro to be driven. The child got entangled with the shaft, but how is not known. A workman inside, noticing the shaft making a peculiar noise, went out and founi the body of the child about 18 feet from the shaft fearfully mutilated, the limbs boing broken and the head crushed. Portions of clothing wero round the shaft, which was bent by ttio occurronco. At tho inquest a verdict of " accidental death " was returned.

Melcilfe deposed that ho did not make such statements. After tho case had cloned defendant discovered a man who had been within ear shot when ho and Slctcalfe had the conversation, and could corroboiato Griovo's version of what occurod His evidence was not admitted, but will bo used m the perjury charge.
