TIMARU LIEDERTAFEL.
Tito Timnru T.iodortrtfel gave llio third concert of tlieir 1889 90 poason in the Assembly Koams last ovoniog, ft Qetnieohtcr Abend, or ladies' and gentlemen's evening. The concert wna u giatifying success from every point of view. There was a large audionce, tlio room being quite full enough. This was satisfactory to the Liedertafel, and equally fio to the audience wore tbe quantity, the variety , and the quality of music provided for them. Ihe room looked extremely well, with most of the audience Boated round small ten tables, decorated with pot plants. In front of tbe stage a fow larger plants turmountod larger tables well filled with light eatables and cups and saucers, of which goodu?o was made during an interval when tho jnuiieiam conjured up steaminp teapots from somewhere or othor. The programme compri.°cd eightecti items, the majority of them cloes find part Bongs. All of these wero capitally given, and the impnrtinlity of the applause Bhowed that orery item was well liked by tho audience. Particularly pleasing was tho po!o " Thu Tmogc of the Ecee." for* i a " humming" accompaniment, which had quite tho effect of an organ, and was calculated to rnabo one think that urticulation in vocal music was a mistake and wibli to hear a "grand orchestra" of human voice?. Another exceptionally good item was tho preceding one, " Tbe march," a jolly pong, with on under current of strong accents in imitation of tho tramp of a regiment. A Norse legend, " Olaf Trygvason," was also a good selection, fur thn wierdnesß of the last two stanzas, this olement being well brought out. " Hark, the merry drum," and tbe "Jubilate" wore other items which went particularly woll. Mr Wardrop and Mr Zicsler, well aciomponicd by Mr Qooch, each sang polos, the former the beautiful " My Queen," and tho latter the ballad " Ere King." It is need less to par tUe»o item* were well received 1 . Mrs Stuart Reid played a pianoforte, solo and Dr Morris, of Pleasant Point, a violin solo, for which he waa determinedly encorod, and liindly responded. The whole concort was very evidently much enjoyed, and the Liedertafel aro to bo complimented on tho industry which was necessary to prepare such a programmo, and congratulated upon the success of iti results.
