THE AUTHOR OF "LOOKING BACKWARD.'"

• Mr Bellamy, the author of " Looting Backward," tbe book of the day, ie a native of Massachusetts. As a young maa he studied law, was admitted to the bar, but did not practice, becoming instead of a lawyer, a writer for the Press, and a contributor to magazines. In 1877 ho spent a year m tb.9 Sandwich islands, and afterwards published three novels, of which " Dr Ueidenhoff's Process " was tlie second. "My last book (he says), ' Looking Backward,' which appeared m 1888, was the outgrowth of a deep conviction that the great nui of American people are blind to the porils into which they are drifting.
