THE AUTHOR OF "LOOKING BACKWARD.'"
• Mr Bellamy, the author of " Looting Backward," tbe book of the day, ie a native of Massachusetts. As a young maa he studied law, was admitted to the bar, but did not practice, becoming instead of a lawyer, a writer for the Press, and a contributor to magazines. In 1877 ho spent a year m tb.9 Sandwich islands, and afterwards published three novels, of which " Dr Ueidenhoff's Process " was tlie second. "My last book (he says), ' Looking Backward,' which appeared m 1888, was the outgrowth of a deep conviction that the great nui of American people are blind to the porils into which they are drifting. I have not expected any pecuniary harvest, but I am gratified beyond measure at the broadcast seeds of warning which thi book ia cowing. The work has been translated into German, ranish, and French, and the sales m Jingland are qoite as largo BB^ m America. Out -of this book- hai grown a parfy whose aim is the nationalisation of great industries, and the ultimate conduct of all business hv the people, and for the benefit of the people." Mr Bellamy did not talk like a blind believer m a visionary creed, but rather as-fhe calm.apbstlo of a reaionable theory. Continuing, he paid, "Tbe coming party will be satisfied with nothing but a fraternal basis of industry,' and an equality of righto and advantages. Tlii* ii not a claan movement. It appeals to all bnrioess man, and no one is so much interested as tbe small tradesmen thomeelvea. Wo are uot at all rabid. Wo are simply obeying a natural Uw of economics. Wo do not want to hang monopolists and capitalists, but we simply deairo to put au end to the system which permits them to exist. " ■
