♦ (BT TSLZGBAPH. ) DUNBDIN, Jn.vE 7. A larga and «nthmustic meeting was held this eTening to consider tha sweating system. Ilia report of the committee appointed at n meeting some time back won read. It stated that after a lengthy negotiation tho -warehousemen had doclined the proposals submitted to them, which wore that a minimum fcalo bs adopted under which tbs workers could earn fair wages, and that m giving out work to contractors warehousemen and merchants shouM obtain a guarantee that the contractor should pay the workers not les» than the tariff rates, and anyono violating this tha work thonld be withdrawn until reparation waa made. Resolutions werii carried : — (1) That Government be requested to appoint a commission to enquire into tbe sweating system m thi» and othor towns of the colony, and to report as to the bait method of dealing with the whole subject j (2) that efforts be made to form a union of tailoretsej, shirt machinists, finishers and w> jjressers, such union to bo culled the Tailor««3e«* Union of New Zealand. 'Jho following were appointed a committee to give affect to the foregoing resolutions : — i\t B. Stout, Hon. W. 11. Reynolds, Dr Kitnliett, Me<srs Btewartand Minn, M.H.R'i) , the Presidents of tho Social Reform Assochtion, the Toiloro' L'nion, Trades and Labour Council, Curpant«rs' Association, Hoot Manufacturers' and Messrs Maitland and Wishart.
