The police hay« received a letter signed " Jack the Ripper," apprising them of hia arrival m Australia, and announcing hi« intention of entering upon a career of crime here similar to his performance m London and the West Indies. The writer concludes by telling them to catch him if they can. The police believe the letter to be a hoax, but precautionary measures have been taken ia view of possibilities. COMMERCIAL. Barley, Cape, 3» ; market ia dull. There is a steady demand for bran at Is Id ; pollard, Is 2d to Is 2|d. Potatoes, New Zealand, £4 10s ; Tasmanian, £4 17s lid ; Circular Heads, £5 2s <3d. Onions, best New Zealand, are scarce at £15 to £16. The butter market is glutted with inferior <jualitiee and only the best <|aality is saleable. Separator made, Is to Is Id ; dairy made, 8d to lOd. The cheese market is dull, and there i« » plentiful supply of local manufacture at <>d to 7W ; New Zealand 7d to 7id. Bacon it scarce at 100, and hams are m demand at lHd to Is. Meiboukne, May 'li.
