The Government intend to combine the office of Clerk to the Executive Council with some of those offices already in existence, as there is not enough work for one mao. No appointment has jet been made. The Major objects to Laing and Smith fighting here, but the police at present seo no ground for interference. They consider it onlv a glove contest anil not a prizefight. May 19. The gloro contest between Laing, of Wangnnui, and Smith, of Australin, resulted in a fiateo. By an advertisement the publio wero led to believe that the fight was to bo to a finish, but when the hall was crowded it wob calmly announced that it had been arranged to light eight rounds for a "purse." At tho end of the eighth round both men appeared to be as freeh as when they had started, ond the referee declared tho contest a draw. Another crack haa been discovered in the destructor on the side nearest to the gas works. It begins about 40 feet above the ground, and runs upwards in n scarcely per* ceptible line for six or eight feet. The corporation officials attribute it to the heat of the furnaces, and consider it to be such an opening as is common in large smoke Btacks, and in no way a cause for alarm. Frank Martin, who was injured by a tree at Otaki on Thursday, died in the hospital yesterday. Lately sho hud been more depressed than usual, and at a quarter to '8 o'clock this morning sbo loaded a breechloader, and placing it on Ibo tublo with tho muz/ilo to her breast, leaned over and pulled the triggor.
