A match took place to-day between F. Gaukro3ger, a well known Marlborough pedestrian, end J. Bain, a sprint runner from Canterbury and Otago. The case of {alleged illicit distillation occupied the court all yesterday. A number of witnesses were examined for the prosecution. Evidence of alleged experts was called on behalf of the accused, to show that the oppliances seized were too crude aud altogether inadequate for tho manufacture of whisky. Tho second charge was for hanng spirits m his possession on which duty had not been paid. His Worship held that the onus of proof rested on defendant to show how ho came by tho spirits and whether the duty was paid. Defondant was fined on this charge £100, or three months' imprisonment.
