THE YEARS FINANCES.
♦ RECEIPTS AND EXPENDITURE. The special correspondent of the Press wired from Wellington on .Sunday : I am now in a position to give you tlio exact figures showing thd results of tho financial yenr's operations, which wore only ma'Jo up finally last night. There U a surplus on the revenue and expenditure of tho consolidated fund amounting to£;7,818 3s sd. On the land fund, which is kept as a separate account, thero ia a deficiency of £11,489 fis 3d, tho receipts undor that heud, although somewhat larger than last year, having failed to ment tho expenditure of that department. The land revenue suffered considerably through tho heavy arrears on the part of the doforred payment settlers, which Parliament refined to allow tho Government to deal with. Deducting the land fund deficiency from the consolidated fund eurclus, a net balanco'of £66,328 7s 2d is" left to tho good, but as the primiigo duty, which amounted to £46,132 5s Bcl for tho ten months of its operation, was specially levied for tho purpoau of paying off by instalments the balance of the old deficit left by the Stout-Vogel Ministry, and is thereforo " ear-marked " for that object, this has to be so applied and cannot be used in aid of ordinary revenue. Employing this sum in paying off so much of tho old deficit a net balance remains of £20,190 Is 6d. This, then, is tho absoluto net Burplus for tho year. Taking all tho various accounts together, and getting out tho difference between receipts and expenditure, it will thus bo scon that the amount of taxation needed to make both ends meet without exacting a larger sum than wns imperatively required has beon very closely estimated.
