THE LATE JUDGE JOHNSTON.
« 1 (By Telegraph.) WELLINGTON, Jcnb 4. At the Supremo Court this morning reference was made to the death of Judge Johnston. There was a full Bench and bar, and a number of visiting barristers were present. The Chief Justice, addressing the Attornoy-Gen-eral, said all well know how well the late Judge had performed his duties. He was possessed of great natural ability, and his loss would be deeply regretted by the Bench, bar and public. Bir F. Whitaker, on bohalf of the New Zealand Bar, aaid thirty years ago it was his privilege as Attorney-General to welcome tho lato Judge to tho shores of Now Zealand, and subsequently to congratulate him on his appointment as Judge. During thirty years he had administered justice m tho broadest sense, and not only as a Judge but also as a- citizen and neighbour ho was highly esteemed by all, and ho had been a notable example to the legal profession. This was the first occasion m New Zealand on which a Judge had died a Judge, as all previous holders of the office had resigned before death. In conclusion, he rogretted the death of so distinguished a judge, and trusted ho would receivo tho reward of the just. The Court, out of respect, adjourned till tomorrow.
