Tue Legislative Assembly will adjourn on Friday next (the 23rd) for holidays, and will re-assemble on the second Friday m February. (Received 10.35 p.m. Dec. 22nd.) EXTENSIVE FIRE. An extensive fire broke out at Redfern to-day. Horden's bedding and furniture factory was almost entirely destroyed. The damage is estimated at abont £30,000. £12,000 is covered by insurance. The risk is divided between several offices. (Eoceivod 1.55 a.m.. Dec. i3rd.) VICTORIAN DEFENCES. Melbourne, Dec. 22. It is reported that MrDownes, Secretary for Defence, has tendered his resignation, and that he will succeed Colonel Disney as Commandant of the Victorian forces, on the expiration of the latter's term of office m July next. QUARANTINE. The Premier has received a letter from the Premier of Tasmania, suggesting that the Federal Council be asked to consider the propriety of adopting a uniform system of quarantine for all the colonies. The writer complains that during the recent outbreak of smcllpox Tasmania was badly treated by the other colonies.
