! (By Tblbokaph.) AUCKLAND, Sept. 30. It is reported that gold-bearing sand has been found at Patotere, near Cambridge, only one foot below the surface. Groat excitement is experienced at Cambridge consequent upon the report. The scrutiny of voting papers used at the recent Newton eleotion was made to-day, when double votes were disallowed, the amended returns being :— Withey, 701 ; Tolo, 606 ; Garrett, 170. William Johnson was charged to-day at Cambridge with porsonation at the Cambridge election, and remanded. A conference of those interested m the development of the mining industry was held to-day at the Chamber of Commerce for the purpose of urging upon the newly elected Auckland representatives the necessity of securing Government aid m mining matters. Several members of the House were present. Speeches wera made m which was represented the extreme necessity of assisting the mining industry at the Thames goldCeld, and the representatives were requested to bring the matter under the notice of the Government m the ensuing session. Whilst the schooner Loristan was off Pura Bay, Whangarei, yesterday, m the midst of a storm, a large ball of fire rushed past the vessel, burning itself oat m the water just ahead of her. A strong smell of sulphur was perceptible. NEW PLYMOUTH, Bbpt. 30. Several persons having refused to pay the New Plymouth harbour rate, they combined together to try a case m Court whioh was heard on Wednesday. The Resident Magistrate gave judgment this morning m favour of the Harbour Board stating he had no doubt the rate had been proporly slruok.
