CORRESPONDENCE.

» ■ . HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE ! AID MATTERS. TO THE EDITOR OF THE TIMARU HERALD. Siu, — I observe m your issue of to-day ii rather lengthy letter from Mr W. J. Steward, m which ho attemps to explain hia action, or to speak more correctly his inaction m the matter. He will persist m quoting a telegram from Mr Manchester without giving its cLite. Mr Manchester has repeatedly ohown that this telegram was sent to Mr Steward during the session of 188G, when it is not denied that he moved m the matter after his constituents hud pressed him. The charge against him is that he did nothing m the session of 1885 when the bill was passing the House, and hois simply throwing dust m the eyes of the electors m using the telegram the way he is doing. Hovr ia it that Mr Steward found this such an impossible thing, when he succeeded ia a far more difficult ono, i.e., the District Railways Bill, doing his utmost iv the House to get it passed, and thon immediately act as corumis3iona?ent inselling the Waimate Railway to the Government, the commission on the said railway amounting to £1035 ? I leave your readers to form their own conclusion as to what was uppermost m Mr Steward's mind while the above events were transpiring. I am, &c.j Observee. Septembor 24th, 1887.
