Alameda left here yesterday (Friday) afternoon for Auckland. vßooeived 1.35 a.m., Sopt. 2GtlO O'BRIEN'S TRIAL.— THE DEFENDANT CONVICTED. Sept. 25. The trial of O'Brien took place at Mitchelstown yesterday. In the course of the proceedings Mr Harrington, who defended O'Brien, accused the Government of purposely suppressing a true version of O'Brien's speech, and called upon the Crown counsel to substantiate his statement. He, however, denied the truth of the accusation against the Government. The magistrates thereupon rebuked Mr Harrington and threatened his ejectment from the court if such an accusation were repeated. Mr Harrington, thereupon abandoned the case. Mr O'Brien was found guilty, and sentenced to three months' imprisonment upon two charges, the sentences to be concurrent. He was admitted to bail pending an appeal upon the first sentence. SCARLET FEVER. Fiftccu hundred cases of scarlet fever aro now being treated m the London Hospitals, which are filled to their fullest limits. The epidemic is increasing daily.
