(By Telegbaph.) Auckland, Dec. 13. The Rev. John W. Hewell, father-in-law of the Hon. Thomas Russell, has died from an attack of apoplexy. He was the first Wesley an missionary m charge of the Friendly Islands. New Plymouth, Dec. 13. Major Atkinson has completely recovered from his late accident. Mrs j Atkinson's health, however, has m no ■ way improved. Wellington, Dec. 13. In the Compensation Court to-day, J. C. Crawford was awarded £0000, inclusive of interest for land taken by the Government for defeuce purposes. The Crown have also to construct and maintain a fence between Mr Crawford's property and the defence works. The Minister for Public Works left for Napier via Master/ton this morning. He also visits New Plymouth, and returns m about ten days. He then goes to the Weßt Coast of the South laland. The Old Soldiers Claims Commissioners have returned, having completed the hearing of claims. The naval artillery will shortly go into camp at Point Halswell for ten days for instructions m fort and big gun drill. Chbistchpkch, Dec. 13. Joseph Edgar Carter, 31 years old, was found dead m bed this morning. The cause of death was enlargement of the heart. Sir J. Von Haaat writes that he has obtained for the museum a fine collection of Indian art treasures, some Assyrian relics, and translations of Cuneform inscriptions. He expeots to get some mummies m cases. Ashbcrton, Nov. 13. The Hon. Mr Ballance was m Ashburton to-day, and was interviewed by several deputations. A little girl named Smithers waß this evening playing near a pile of planks, when one was dislodged by another child and struck her. A piece of wood she had m her hand was forced through the roof of her mouth into the brain. The child died m a few minutes. Geraldinr, Dec. 13. At the Resident Magistrate's Court today, before Messrs Pe.trpoint and Moore, J.P.s, Jameß Wflcocks was charged with assaulting two young ladies on last Sunday week. The case was proved, and the defendant was sentenced to a month's imprisonment. Dcnedin, Deo. 13. The monthly escort brought £25,0000 worth of gold. The shareholders m tho National Insurance Company are taking concerted action to object and getting the directors to consider the propriety of returning to shareholders the entire capital subscribed at the time of the new issue of shares. A six-year-old son of a farmer named Crossan, at White Sow Valley, near Nsseby, was crushed to death by a atone roller passing over him. The weather waß distressingly cold yesterday, and there were frequent heavy falls of hail all day. Inveroargill, Dec. 13. An extraordinary spill of cold boisterous weather is now being experienced m the district. Severe hail showers have fallen, and shorn sheep are dying of exposure.
