The cases comprise forgery and uttering, false pretences, escape from gaol, assault, and two charges of attempt to murder. There are eleven civil cases, one for an injunction against the members of the Harbor Board, and a claim of £500 against Harold for libelling John Baldwin. Wellington, Dec. 10. Mrs Jones, wife of Mr W. Jones, one of the oldest Wellington settlers, was to-day found dead m a creek at Paikakariki. A proclamation m the supplementary Gazette, published to-night, further prorogues Parliamentuntil the IGth February. The annual volunteer inspection tomorrow on the reclaimed land is likely to be interfered with by the weather. It is now raining heavily. For the last two months heavy gales have blown nearly every day. The wind this yearia said to have been worse than for twelve or thirteen years. It ia stated that the Warapu reservoir is so capacious that during the drought of last summer the city drew more water from the dam than was supplied to it by the stream. Two mining accidents, which almost miraculously escaped being attended with fatal results, occurred at Remu. John Vincent was sinking a shaft from which a huge boulder was being drawn. When a foot from the surface the windlass broke and fell with the boulder down the shaft. To escape was impossible. The boulder jammed m the shaft during its descent. The windlass fell on the man but not seriously injuring him, he being able to walk home after extrication. In the other case a large piece of rock fell on James Perry m a drive doing him great injury. He was immediately conveyed to the hospital. Christchurch, Dec. 10. Sir R. Stout leaves for Dunedin tomorrow. Mr Ballance inspected the defence works to-day and leaves for the South on Monday. The property stolen from Mills' tailors shop last Wednesday night was recovered buried m the garden of a man named Payne, who, with his wife, has been arrested. Dpnedin, Dec. 10. At the inqueat touching the death of the child of Mrs Donnelly, found dead m bed, the evidence showed that her first child had died from being overlaid. A verdict was returned m the present case that the child was smothered, the jury adding a rider that they did not free the mother from blame as, after the death of the first child, she should have been more on her guard. It turns out that it was not sheclite which was discovered on the Otago Peninsula, but sandstone. The specimen gave a promising yield of gold.
