THOUSAND-HEADED KALE.
In a paper read beforo tbo Farmers' O!ub a few years ago, Mr Robert Rus;el dwelt very strongly on tho point that his main kalt I crop, uflor being grown, was ready for consumption iv October, or if not wanted so early, might remain standing m the land ready for utilisation at any time till April. Jn the discussion which took place afterwards, Mr Claro Sowell Head remarked that kale was tho mest accouiodating plant ho had over heard of, as it appeared the grower could choose his own time ns to when it should be fed. While mangolds required to bo lifted and Btored, and turnips to bo fed off according to their age, kulo did not deteriorate by being allowed to remain m the land tho entire winter, although perfectly matured m the autumn. It is on account of this that Mr Russell hns abandoned mangold growing altogether. He also considers kale to be more nutritious than roots, Jand tho fact that very few sheep nro lost at Ilorton Court, even duri.g the lambing season, testifies to its healthgiving properties.
