AN AMERICAN OUTRAGE.
»- (By Telegraph.) Wbllinoton, Oct. 18. It has transpired that G. F. Sherwood, who recently went to Samoa m connection with certain land olaims, and who returned by the mail steamer Mararoa, was under arrest on board tho American Man of-war Mohican. Ho -was arrested by a party of bluo jackets while on board the steamer Explorer, at the instance of tho American Consul, Mr Greenbaum. He was theu sent ashore without his luggage, nnd finally after nearly two days detention, was taken by the Mohi an and placed on board the mail steamer, no charge was made against l.itn, but profuse regroti wero expressed prior to his liberation. Mr Sherwood is an English subject, and was for over sixteen years a 1-ading man m Taranaki, provincial district, taking part ''rovincial Council, County Council and other bodies. He has complained on the subject of his arrest to the English Governm-'nt, and loaves for London shortly to prosecute aj claim for damages against the United States Government.
