NEW SOUTH WALES DEFICIT.
• (By Telegraph.) (Per e>s. Mariposa via Auckland.) Sydney, Oct. 7. The Premier niatie an extra Financial Statement m the Assembly list night. Ho said the non-adoption of certain ot the Government proposals had affected the revenue for tho current year. There was a falling off m the duties on spirits, nines and tobacco. Iha operation of trade had been limited by the want of money, and woreo than that, through the fear that things, though bud, might be worse. The country had been m »uch n state as he did not recollect seeing it m during the past 22 years. Not only hod there been a falling off m ordinary Customs and Railway receipts, but also m the amount obtained by tho land sales. Government had beon also obliged to find work for the unemployed, which m itself showed tho groat depression of the times. The deficiency was large, and might possibly incrcaso, and it mainly resulted from inability to sell tho land. The probable deficiency ot tho end of the year would be two millions. A good season had arrived, and thero was good reason to expect a return to prosperity. During tho recess it would be tho duty of the Government to consider seriously the question of retrenchment.
