(By Telegraph.) Auckland, Sept. 21. A firo on the railway wharf afc two o'clock this morning destroyed the office of the Auckland Brick Company, and damaged the premises and stock of the North and New Zealand Farmers' Cooperative Association. The brigade quickly suppressed the fire. The extent of the damage and insurances is not yet known. The s.e. Manapouri has been granted pratique, and the passengers allowed to land. Mr Bnllance and Colonel Whitmora inspected the harbour fortifications to-day, and were much pleased with the progress male. Wbllinqtoh, Sept. 81. The Colonial Treasurer is preparing a precis of the provisions of the Government Leans to Local Bodies Act, and notice will shortly bo given of the date when applications for loans can bo granted until tboy have obtained authority to rniso them. This ia given both under the Local Bodies Loan Bill and Counties Act. The latter comes into force m January next, but the requisite power is m existence m the old Act. It has been decided to retain Mr Wardell, 8.M., m his present position and offer the vacancy m Wairarapa to Mr Stunner, R.M., of Mokianga. Sir Julius Vogel's application for a re-hear-ing of the libel action against the Evening Press is set down for to-morrow, but it is understood it will be adjourned to enable the Attorney-General to conduct the argument for the plaintiff. A man named Ward, found dead at Island Bay, leaves a wife and ten children. His stomach has been sent to an analyst. For tho next meeting of the City Council tho Mayor has moved—" That no rate bo struck on account of hospital and charitable aid during the present financial year." The body found at Island Bay yesterday has been identified as that of Wm. Ward, a labourer, who had been out of employment for sometime and was m a despondent state. The post mortem shows ft condition of body bordering upon starvation. Deceased leaves a wife and 8 children. The police have laid an information against the Gear Hefrigerating Company, for having sold native game out of season. It appears that tho game sold is native pigeons and ducks, and that theae have been kept m Iho company's refrigerator from before the close of the shooting season. Tho police contend that, under the Animals Protection Act, sales after the end of July are illegal, even though the goods are m the frozen state. The case is to be heard on tho 29th inßtant. Wanganui, Sept. 21. Messrs Butler and Stevens, Land Purchase Commissioners, have returned from Waikato and Taupo, where they have been obtaining signatures to the Waimarino block sales. They wero very successful, and have only 260 to get. r lhe court will sit early next year to define the Government interest, when a largo proportion of the remainder of the shares will have been purchased. Dotcedin, Sept. 21. An influential deputation interviewed the Premier re the delay m the completion of the bridge m tho south* end of the town. The Premier replied that the present contract would be completed within three months, tho whole work within bix months. The bridge is to be opened m April. Mr Wales, who was at one time member for Dunedin, is reported to be a likely candidate for tho Dunedin Central Beat m the Ministerial interest.
