MACKENZIE COUNTY CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.
» This society held their annual spoils gallic: ing at Burkes Pass, on ldth September, 188 G. The gathering was a most successful ono. The day was line ; there were lur;;e fields of competitors, and about 'iOO.'n^vtitori wero present. All the chief events were well contestotl, and the record of tho performances good. Tho course (a new one lhii your), was just a little heavy, owing to a fall of rain tho night before, 'iho piping an I dancing were particularly good, several of the visitors saying that they had not seen a better turn out m New Zealand. Owir.g to I lie length of tho programme for ono day's sports, it was unfortunately necessary to havo two contests coming o(T at tho s-.imc time ; but this could not bo helped, a3 it would not do to havo two days' sports nt a meeting 60 far up country. As it was, the programme was barely finished before dark. At the conclusion of the day, Mrs McGregor gave away tho medals, assisted by Mr Scott, tlic President, which ceremony was rendered more imposing by tho pipers having a grand march m concert round the grounds.
