Gentlemen, - I am m receipt of your communication, 4th July, which has been duly placed before the Seamen'a Union. After mature consideration, and after interviewing Captain Hay ward of the Mariposa and reading a communication from J. D. Spreckles, the following course of action was adopted, viz., the Mariposa to be supplied with as many non-union hands m this port (Sydney) as required, and on her arrival m San Francisco all the Chinese to be discharged, and tho three men demanded by you to bo taken. Captain Hayward has g'ivon us to understand that this will bo done, and on these conditions tho Jlariposa leaves Sydney. Should sho return hero again with Chinese, sho will remain till she takes Europeans. This J. D. Sprecklea and Captain Hay ward thoroughly understand. Wo deemed it better m your interest that the Chinese should be discharged m San Fr.mciseo, so that the employment properly belonging to them should not bo taken away from that port. (Signed) Thos. M. Tho reading of the letter was accompanied by loud applnuso, and the opinion was freely vented at the meeting that it would settlo Spreckles' attempt to boycott tho two delegates from tho Australian Union. It was stated that the colonial Unions would Bupport tho federation m every way.
