(By Telegraph.) Names, May 8. A serious buggy accident occurred yesterday to Mr E. Patten, Collector of Customs, and his wife. Whilo driving down Monroe street tho whistling of a passing locomotive frightened the horse, which bolted down Edward street into Hastings Btreet and came into collision with a verandah opposito Swan's brewery. Tho concussion capsized tho buggy, broke the verandah post, and the upper heavy beam fell on Mrs Patten, breaking both her thighs. Patten had his left leg broken. Watt's hotel at Wohaka, together with a storo, was burned down last night, the inmates baroly escaping with their lives. The insurances are : — ln tho ' Union office, £300 on tbe stock and store, £500 on billiard tables, £50 on liquors j m the United office, £100 on furniture, £50 on liquors and £50 on j billiard tables. Married men beyond 40 will bo exempt from service m the militia, Tho 3rd class will include married men botween 30 and 40 and single men from 40 to 65, not as previously telegraphed. Wellington, May 8. The following telegram has been received by tho Government from Sir P. C. Owen, dated May 4th : — The Prince of Wales this day officially inspected tho N.Z. section. He was received by Sir F. D. Bell, Dr von Haast and Dr Buller, and ho examined with much interest and m detail the various sections of the exhibition, and expressed his great satisfaction at the hearty co-operation of tho Government of New Zealand and the completeness of tho arrangements. Continued experiments with the Auckland ammunition at long ranges Bhow that tho colonial cartridges aro practically now quite as good as tho imported ones. Tho shooting varied four points m their favour to three worse than Woolwich ammunition. The cartridges cases cost one third more than m England, but unlike the latter they can bo used again and again. Blenheim, May 8. Tho Supreme Court was occupied yesterday and to-day with an action tried beforo a special jury, to recover £1500 damages, sustained by tbo Hon. W. Clifford, owner of Vernon run, m consequence of an extensive grass fire, occasioned by a defective briok kiln, belonging to the defendants Parker and Maddock, contractors for Dashwood Pass railway contract. The caso is still proceeding. The two Racing Clubs hitherto existing here have amalgamated, and start operations with a credit balance of £200, and considerable assets. A new course has been purchased upon Mr Charles Redwood's property, and it is intended to remove the grand-stand from tho present course. At the most numerous racing meeting ever held m Marlborough. Mr Henry Redwood was elected President of the amalgamated clubs. The new course will he ready for the Bpring meeting. CHRisTcnr/Bcn, May 8. Alfred Osborne, formerly an undertaker, died this morning from tho effects of a fall on the steps of the Central Hall on April 12th. Mrs Messenger, wife of the absconding publican, gavo evidence this morning at the R.M. Court, under the " Fugitive Offendeft Act," to the effect that he had left her and six children unprovided for since February last. Constable Allen goes to Melbourno per Wairarapa, on Tuesday next to bring Messenger back.
