TEE SEAL FISHERIES.
(By Teleokaph.) Invbrcakoili., April 14, A memorial to the Minister of Lands, protesting against the Government proposal to lease the seal fisheries for a term of twentyond years, is now m circulation for signature. A monopoly is objected to on tho ground of its leading to serious abuses and inflicting injury on the fur seal trade. It is pointed out that the monopoly protested against would curtail the means of employment of a number of residents of Stewart's Island, Riverton and Bluff, who for- jeara past have been accaatomed to join m fur seal expeditions. The memorialists contend that the seal should be an open fishery under proper restrictions and supervision. In reply to a telegram from the M.H.R'b. for Mataura and Awarua, asking that the matter be held over till after the meeting of Parliament, a reply has been received from the Under Secretary, stating a proposal lias been made to extend the time for receiving tenders till 17th May.
