-c In his address at tho Theatre Royal, Sir Georgo Grey alluded to the nggregat on of enormous fortunes m recent times ns being without precedent m history. On this subject the following remarks appear m a work entitled "Tho Radical Progrnmrnc," issued juat prior to tho English elections : — " Twenty years ngo a man with £10,000 n year was regarded ns a prodigy of wealth. Wow ho ia considered well to-do, and no more, and one may wulk through streets and squares for hours m London, eacli house of which represents probably a minimum incoroo of not less than £8030 a year. In tho last twenty years tho wealth m tho tTritcd K : ngdom has incrcoied by £600,000,^00." Notwith standing this enormous accumulation, intense poverty still reigns nmong mi" : ons m Iho hind. It is no great wonder that witli n. knowledgo of theso fa -ts, nnd goaded by personal suffering, tho unemployed workmen of the great cities Bhould bo carried away by tho attractive but most destructive fallacies of socialism, or Hint, when tho po'ieo are off their guard, they should give free piny to thoir passions m sacking the emporiums of luxury. The statesmen of England havo a, great problem before them, of which tho recen riots aro a significant and rather alarming reminder.
