A scaffolding fell at Freeman's Bay Hotel to-day, precipating three men — Watkins, Gear, and Btitt — to tho ground. All were injured, and WatMns seriously. Bandmaster Morris' wife died suddenly today, after a fit of vomiting The Coroner has ordered &post mortem examination. Napibe, March 12. Lieutenant Boss, winner of the Carbine Championship at the Rifle Association's meeting at Wanganui, with the other Hawkes Bay representatives, returned to Napier lost evening. He was met at the Town Boundary by tho Mayor of Napier, three Volunteer corps, and the members of tlie Fire Brigade, bearing torches. A procession was formed with the Garrison Band at the head, aud Lieutenant Boss was escorted to his residence. A great number of citizens mot to welcome him. Latbe. The representatives wore entertained at a smoke concert at Hie Caledonian Hotel, the Mayor of Nupicr m the chair and Captain Blythe m tbe vieecbair. A reward of £50 is offered for the disi covery of the murderer of a man whose body , was found m the Waikato Hirer on the 21at December last, with mortal wounds m his , head. He came to his death by foul play, according to the verdict of the jury at the inquest. The Minister of Defence has, atter full consideration, decided to confer the New Zealand Cross on Lieat. Colonel Thomas McDonnell, of the New Zealand Militia. Colonel McDonnell's gallant conduct during the Maori War on the West Coast leaves m the recollection of all old settlers m the colony, and some of the earlier instances m which he distinguished himself were borne testimony to by Generals Chute and Cameron, under whom the colonial forces were commanded by Colonel McDonnell. The petition against the election of tho Epuni Licensing Committee has been withdrawn. Pamierston, March 12. Totford, -winner of the Waoganui Cup, met with a serious accident yesterday. While being taken over m a punt at the lower ferry he was restive and his hind legs were caught between the wire and the woodwork of tho punt. The wire was cut and the horse liberated, but his hind legs wero considerably damaged. Christohurch, March 12. This morning Mr Beethatn, R.M., made an order for W. J. Messenger to contribute 25s a week toward the support of the family of his son, W. H. Messenger, formerly landlord of His Lordship's Larder, who left Christchurch some time ago ostensibly to go to the Dunedin races. It appeared afterwards that he had bolted with a barmaid from his hotel. He is supposed to be m Melbourne. Dunedin, March 12. Thos. Babbit, a settler at Akatoro, has been fined £10 or one month's imprisonment for omitting to supply a number of sheep with proper and sufficient food. Tho sheep belonged to a neighbour and accused took them for trespassing, and kept 10 sheep m a yard 27 feet square. With reference to the telegram regarding the appointment of Mr Hean to the Inspectorship of tho National Bank the, information is not correct. Advices have been received that he is returning to the colony, but to another position. It is understood that the University Council will hold a special meeting re Dr Salmond's appointment to tho Mental Science Chair, when tho decision arrived at is likely to be reversed. The Chancellor, it is stated has a deliberative and casting vote, and by its oiercise tho former decision, not to sanction Dr Salmond's appointment, can be reversed.
