Count Hartzfeldt, the German Ambassador | m England, has formally repudiated, on behalf ' of the German Government, any intention to annex Samoa. The Marylebono Cricket Club, after dis--1 cuesing the proposed visit of an Australian ' Eleven to England m tho approaching season, expressed an opinion favorable to the inclusion m the team of nny members of the last 1 Australian Kleven, whom it might bo thought ' desirable to send. The Daily Telegraph publishes a elate- ' ment this morning that tho Conservative party will submit a proposal m connection ' with their scheme for the pacification of Ireland, that tho oli'ico of Lord-Lieutenant, now \ rendered vacant by the resignation of Earl ■ Carnarvon, should be abolished. ' Jan. 15. ' Mr J. A. Froude, who recently visited Australia, has just published an account of his travels under the title of " Oceania." Mr Gladstone is stated to have oxpressed his conviction that tho establishment of an Irish Parliament is essential to the settlement of tho present agitation. It is reported that he is endeavoring to convert his colleagues m tho Liberal party to that opinion. Tho opposition against Mr Bradlaugh is subsiding. It is improbable that any further action will be taken m tbe mattor. Jan. 19. It is rumored thnt the Eight Hon. Lord Georgo Francis Hamilton will bo appointed to tho position of Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. Mr Stead, the editor of the rail Mall Gazelle, was releasod yesterday. To-day a meeting was held to welcome Mr Stead after his incarceration, the proceedings at which were characterised by great enthusiasm.
