Miscellaneous. THE LATEST AMERICAN INVENTION, THE VICTORY OF ELECTRICITF. SINCE Electricity has been applied foi lighting purposes, all efforts of inventors havo beon directed to construct a lamp fo] general domestic use. The reason why this problem has till now not been solved is thai none of the inventors could rid themselves o the idea of gas-lighting, and that all hav< adhered to the system of producing the Elec tricity m somo co .tral place, or by largi machinery, insfead of first laying down thi principle that a Lamp which should ever be como genorally useful and popular must bi porlablc, like an Oil Lamp, and contain thi generator of Electricity m itself, i.e., m th. foot of the Lamp. The Norman Electric Light Co. has at las succeeded m completely realising this idoal o Electric Lighting, and there is no doubt tha this most important invention will brin| about a complete revolution m all branches o lighting. Our Electric Lamp needs neither Ma chinery, Conductors, nor any expensive out lay, nnd is neither complicated nor disagree able m manipulation ; all that is ncces sary 13 to refill it every four or five day with acid. Tho cost of lighting will b as cheap as gas (3i cents per hour) and it has before tho latter the iin menso advantago of neither producing heat smoko nor carbonic acid, owing to which thi air is not impured, and remains at the sami degree of temperature. It is, further, abso lutely inodorous, and does not need to b( kitidled by match or otherwise, but simply bj turning the key, thus avoiding all danger o; fire, explosion or suffocation, as m tho case oi gas, if the key is left open ; and it must b< conceded that this advantage alone is m valuable. It is further preferable to anj known kind of lighting for tho following reasons : — 1. Its manipulation is so simple that anj child can keep it m order. 2. That the Lamp is portable, and can b< removed like any Oil Lamp from one placi to another. 3. That it neither requires the disagreeabli fixing of the wick or the cleaning of th< cylinder, as m the case of Oil Lamps. 4. That the light produced is a soft anc most steady one ; that it never flickers, anc the flame, though being equal m power o: lighting to gas, can be regulated to anj degree. 5. That every danger of fire is absolutely excluded, as the light will extinguish immedi ately if by any accident tho glass surroundin; the burner should be broken. 6. That it will burn, even m the strongest wind, completely unaffected, thus being m valuable for illuminations, lighting of gar dens, corridors, etc. This Lamp is constructed for tho present m three different sizes : — A, small size. Height of couipleto Lamp, 14 inches ; weight, about five pounds ; for lighting rooms, cellars, storage houses, powder magazines (or similar places wlißre explosives are kept), coaches, illuminations, gardens, mines, or any other industrial purpose. Price, £1 per Lamp, delivered free to any part of the world. B, medium size. Serves all domestic purposes for lighting rooms, houpes, etc. Thi3 Lamp is elegantly decorated, and has removable while ground Glass Globe. Price, per Lamp (inclusive of JUronze Foot and Giobo, richly and elegantly constructed), £2, delivered free to any part of the world. C, Grand size for Parlor, Hall, Saloon, Public Building, etc. The Lamp gives a most brilliant and steady light, has large removable white Globe, decorated most tastefully, and the workmanship is both first-clivss and elegant. Price, £4> 10s. Foot of Lamp m cither Bronze, Japanese, Faience, or Silver Oxide, Any special size or design niado to order. Estimates furnished. All Lamps are ready for immediato U3e, and will ba sent, securely packed m strong wooden box, with printed directions for use, a quantity of chemicals suflicient for several months' lighting, and one extra burner for sizo A, and two for Bizes B and C. The necessary chemicals can be purchased m any Drug Store, m even the smallest village.
