FIRES.
(By Telegraph.) Auckland, Jun. 12. Subscriptions are coming in freely for the fund for tho relief of the sufferers by the bush fires at Taranaki. , The bush firo at the back of Otahuhu, which has been burning for u weok, destroyed two miles of buBU. New PtrMouiir, Jan. 12. ' The bush fires have been subdued and all danger may now be said to ba over. A tele-, gram came into New Plymouth last night t but the lire had broken out at Bltham and ' volunteers from Now Plymouth again went out in a special train, but the firo was put out. The special engiuo camo in at four o'clock this morning and from the special report of the Taranaki Herald all was apparently safe. A meeting of tha Central Relief Committee took place at noon to-day. The Mayor of New Plymouth presided. It was resolved that telegrams should bo eont to the Mayors in othor parts of tho colony heartily thanking the people for their sympathy and offers of aid; that the fires were now sinking, and, so far as ascertained, tbo amount subscribed was sufficient. Should further need arise the Committee will gladly avail itself of the offers of further aid. ■Wrixington, Jan. 12. The proprietors of the Evening Post havo . sent to tlioSecretary of the Stratford Relief Fund a draft for £100, which is the first instalment on the amount collected. , . , CIIKISTCHUHCH. Jin. 12. Early ihis morning a flve-roomed cottage in Queen street, occupied by Mrs Bean, was burned down. It was mortgaged and insured ' in the National office for £250, and the furni--1 ture in the Equitable for £100. The occu- ' pants were absent when tho firo occurred and ' its cause is unknown. A meeting of citizens was convened by tbe Mnyor to-day to take measures for the relief of the sufferers by the Taranaki firea. No ■ action was taken in consequence of the information telegraphed from New Plymouth to the effect that the amount already subscribed was sufficient. The Mayor expressed tho opinion that if.it was found that substantial help were jot required, Christchurch 1 would be prepared to lend a helping hand. DtfNßDiJf, Jan. 12. The Rev. Mr Hill has asked the ladies of his congregation to provide clothing for the families burnt out at Stratford.
