Miscellaneous. THK LATEST AMERICAN INVENTION. THE VICTORY OF ELECTRIOIT?. SINCE Electricity has been applied for lighting purposes, all efforts of inventors have been directed to construct a lamp for. general domestic use. The reason why this problem has till now not been solved is that none of the inventors could rid themselves ol the idea of gas-lighting, and that all have adhered to tho system of producing the Electricity m some cc tral place, or by largo machinery, instead of first laying down the principle that a I amp which should ever become generally useful and popular must be portable, like an Oil Lamp, and contain the generator of Hlec-trieity m itself, i.e., m the foot of thi' Lamp. Tho Norman Electric Light Co. has at last succeeded m completely realising this ideal of Klectric Lighting, and thero is no doubt, that this most impor'ant invention will bring about a complete revolution m all branches uf lighting. Our klectrio Lamp needs neither Machinery, Conductors, nor any expensive outlay, and is neither complicated nor disagreeable m manipulation ; all that is necessary is to refill it every four or five days with acid. Ihe cost of lighting will be as cheap as gas (3i cents per hour), and it has before the latter tho im mense advantago of neither producing heat, smoke uor carbonic acid, owing to which ihe air is not impured, and remains at the same degreo of temperature. It is, further, absolutely inodorous, and does not need to be kii.dled by matclior otherwise, but simply by turning the key, thus avoiding al> danger of fire, explosion or suffocation, as m the case of gas, if the key is left open ; and it mußt be conceded that this advantage alone is invaluable. It is further preferable to any known kind of lighting for the following reasons : — 1. Its manipulation is bo simple that any child can keep it m order. 2. Ihat the Lamp is portable, and can be removed like any Cil Lamp from one place to another. 3. Ihat it neither requires the disagreeable fixing of the wick or tho cleaning of the cylinder, as m the case of Oil Lampß 4. Ihat the light produced is a soft and most steady one j that it never flickers, aud the flame, though being equal m power of lighting to gas, can be regulated to any uegree. 5. That every danger of fire is absolutely excluded, as the light will extinguish immediately if by any accident the glass surrounding the burner should be broken. 6. That it will burn, even m the strongest wind, completely unaffected, thus beini; invaluable for illuminations, lighting of gardens, corridors, etc. This Lamp is constructed for tho present m threo different sizes : — A, small Bize. Height of complete Lamp, 14 inches ; weight, about five pounds ; for lighting rooms, ccllare, storage houses, powder magazines (or similar places where explosives are kept-, coaches, illuminations, gardous, mines, or any other industrial purpose.
