SOUTH CANTERBURY BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the South Canterbury Board of Education was held at the Education Office, Government Buildings, on December 3rd. MEMBERS PBEBENT. Mr S.W. Goldsmith (Chairman), Dr Foster, the Bey. George Barclay, Messrs Melville Gray and G. G. Russell. CHAIBMANB STATEMENT. The Chairman said since last meeting Miss Burke of Gapes' Valley had sent m her resignation as .eacher, but had subsequently withdrawn it. Miss J. Ferguson of Upper Otaio had also sent m her resignation, and as the appointment of a third master at th>Tiiaaru school had not been satisfactory, the Cuininitteo had sent a letter to the Board touching on this matter. The appointment of Mr Matheson as teacher at the Burkes Pas 9 school bad been confirmed, ad the purchase of a master's house at Aibury had been completed, 'ihe Board had also received the title for the school site at Kangitira Valley, .a concluding, the Chairman apologised for the absence of Mr W. Tho Architects reported that they had prepared drawings and specifications for the new school at Rangilira Valley, and for additions to the schouluouse at i'airlie Ureek, and forwarded tbein with their report. Tbe Fairlio Creek School Committee wrote stating that they would give £20 to help defray cost of making additions to the r school, and as members of the Board were nut quite clear how the Committee desired the additions made, it was resolved, on the motion of the Bey. The Key- Mr Barclay, on beh&lf of tho Building Committee, reported that the Committee had met and drawn up a «eh»dule showing that it was proposed to spend £1652 on repairs to school buildings, &c. This would )ea»e a balance of about £750, and the Committee suggested that with this sum at : least two residences should be erected. 'Ihe i Committee reminded tbe Board that at Waimate, Temuka, Waimataitai, tiuthorlands, Gapes' Valiey, Kakaha Bush, Upper Waitohi Flat, Belfield, BedeliS and Silreretream jthoro were no masters' residences. At some of these places masters' could easily obtain lodgings, but at others they could not. It was, therefore, a question for the Board to consider where now residences should be erected. Some discussion followed, m the course of which letters wt-re read from the Sutherlands s'ohool Committee offering to raise tho money for a master's residence on certain conditions, and from the Kedcliff Committee again drawing the Board's attention to the necessity for a master's houso. Mr Bussoll stated that m bis opinion a new school would have soon to be erected at Beaconsfield. Be reminded the Board that some time ago the Inspector had made a report! on this district, but as there were many more families resident there now he would like to see the Inspector sent out again.— ihe Bo ml decided that the Inspector should again visit the Utipua district and report on tbe question raised by next meeting- ■ A letter was then read from the Waituna Creek School Committee asking that £5 be granted for improvements to master's house, and from tbe Hurkes Pass Committee asking that £12 bo grantod for repairs to tbe Burkes Pass buildings. It was decided to grant these aumi, and >>n the motion of Dr Foster, seconded by Mr Russell, the Cornmitten's report with these additions «as adopted. The question of building new school houses was held over for future consideration. AUDITOBS. It was resolved tbat the Inspector and Secretary should, as m former years, audit the several School < 'ommittees' account*. BSTIBINO HBKBBBS. The Secretary notified that tho retiring members of tho Board were tho Rev. Geo. Barclay, and M's^rs S. W. Goldsmith and Kdward Wnkelield. He understood that tho last named gentloman did not intend to seek re-election. COHHBBrOKDEKOB. Letters were read as follows : — From residents of Totara Valley, asking that a school be established m their midst. — Inspector to report on application ds soon as possible. From .the Undar-Socrotary for Lands, stating lot No. 8, block 13, containing 41 acres, had been reserved as a school Bite m the Month Rangitata district; From the Kakahu School Committee, requoting the Board to take over the school, fin the average attendance was now 38. — Vfatter bad been already dealt with under the new regulations, which come into force on the Ist January, 1886. : From the Pareora School Committeo, respecting tho resignation of tho master, and requesting tho Board to allow tho resignation to take effect as from the 31st December. — Application agreed to. From tho samo Committee, requesting an additional grant <>f £10, as tho ropairs to the sohool had been found to be more costly than wus anticipated. — Granted. From tho Timaru School Committee, asking the Hoard to readvortise for a third master. After the Chairman had explained tho matter, the application was agreed to. - Frein tho Hilton Bchool Committee, requesting the' Bourd to furnish them with a bell and clock. — Granted. Mr Barclay moved, Mr Gray seconded, and it was carried unanimously — " That the request be very cordially complied with, on condition that the school site furnishes a proper place for the library, the Board's Inspector and Architect to be consulted as to the exact position of the building." Accounts were then passed for payment, and the meeting terminated. The next meeting of the Board is to be held on the 12th January, 1886.
