The annual race meeting under the auspices of the Ma ikihi Racing Club was held m one of Messrs Quiim's paddocks close to thoOtaio railway Blation yesterday. Ihe grounds wero rery well suited foi tho purpoto, and afforded eiccllent racing. Beautiful weather proToiled all day, but towards tho end of the afternoon the breeze off tho Hea becamo very chilly The attendance of the public was rery good, and it wis estimated that during the afternoon there were fully four hundred people present. A large number of visitors left Timaru by tk'.- morning and Express trains. A start was mado with the races shortly afte? twelra o'clock, and the Committeo and olScers of the Club deserve great credit for tha smartness with wbioli they worked the vaiious events off. Mr A. Cowie had a licemed booth on tbo ground, which was well patronised, as was alio Messrs Patrick and (Jibscn's refreshment booth. Mokarakara and Scaltheon alternately held the lead, but m coming into the home run the gelding drew away, and won a good race by about a length, m the totalisator £91 ; £41 on the winner dividend £1 19s. The order on pasaine the pust the first time was Scaltheen, Tim Whiffler, Jack and Vanity Fair. Two furlongs further, Jack was again running so-ond, and was rapidly overhauling Scaltheen. A desperate race ensued down the si might and resulied m a dead heat ; a good third. J lie owners of Scalthoen declined to run off the dead heat, and Jack af terwurds cantered round for the stakes. Meehan'e Kanaka also ran. Kato kept the lead till entering the straight, when Nelly camo away and won by a length and a half. In the totalisator, £26 ; £9 on the winner ; dividend £i 12s. Kate's owner lodged a protest against Nelly, on the ground that sho was not owned m the district, bnt tho protest was not upheld. Coksolation Eace, a handicap of 10 soys ; 1 milo. MrG.Barclay'sMistake,B3t 41b(3.Trilford) 1 Mr P. Richard's Forty-fives, 9st (Burgess) 2 Mistake won by half a length, after a hard finish. This race brought the meeting to a closo.
