(By Telegraph.) Auckland, Oct. 28. Dr A. Young, medical superintendent of the Lunatic Asylum, died yesterday. An attempt has been made to cat down the suspension bridge across the cemetery gully. Several of the wire stays were cut as with a tomahawk. Wm. Bennett, a commission agent, has been committed for trial on two charges of forgery. The Tramway Company have petitioned the City Council to atop the dangerous practice of Salvationists having band playing and torchlight processions on the route of the tramways, as likely to lead to terious. if not fatal accidents. A resolution was carried requesting Su > erintendent Thomson to take steps to conserve the safety and convenience of the public. Weixihoton, Oct. 23. The stale of Lady Jcrvois health is such t-iat she will not be nble to travel for two or three weeks, and the projected visit of the Governor to Christcburch has been postponed for about that time. It is understood that Government intend to promote Sir G. Whitmore to the rank of Brigadier or Major-General. An accident occurred to-day to a man named Guy, a carpenter, by falling down a cellar of tbe Commercial Hotel. He broke one of hi* ribs m the fall, which grazed bis right lung. He is expected to recover. This morning a fire occurred at the Oyster Island by which a house bolonging to Grosse, a fisherman, containing eight rooms, was destroyed. Mrs Grosse (the husband being absent at the time) first noticed a quantity of •mole m & room, and on socking the causo it was ascertained that the house was on 6re. The flame* were so strong that it was impossible to save any of the furniture. Tho family— there being twelve children ranging from 16 yean to seven months — are left entirely destitute, and great sympathy is expressed for Grosae, -who is a steady, industrious man, and who was uninsured. Chribtchuhch, Oct. 23. An unusually large brill -was caught off New Brighton this morning, and presented to Sir 3. Yogel by the fisherman. In accepting the pft Sir Julius expressed an opinion that a society should be formed m New Zealand similar to the National Fisheries Association of England, to deul with the Government on one hand, and the trade on the other, m order to place the fisheries on a thoroughly satisfactory basis. He also advocated tho formation of aquariums m tho principal towns of the colony. The Bynod to-night considered » cointnunication from the Wellington Synod asking them to recommend the General Synod to define a communicant. It was decided not to take any action m tbe matter. A resolution was passed to the effect that a petition be presented to Government asking them to reconsidsr their decision m regard to purchasing the Woimea Plains railway. It was also resolved to resist the collection of the rate to the utmost, and steps were taken for combined action to resist all stopi for levying distress for the railway rate. During the meetmg the Premier and Colonial Treasurer's connection with the Agricultural Company was severely animadverted upon.
