Mr Gladstone, speaking with reference to the position of the Christian population m the Balkan province*, advises them to initiate the moderate attitude assumed by the Powers m regird to matters m dispute as the best means of securing a farorable settlement. Oct. 1. A letter is published m Truth from G. A. Sala, who is now visiting tho Australian colonies. It indicates that Mr Fain has an ambition to become a member of tlie House of Commons. Mr Sa'.i describes the members of the Melbourne Yorick Club as " a gang of cads." A subscription is about to be opened here with the object of raising funds to provide a new equipment for Mr H. O. Forbes, the explorer, who was despatched to New Guinea by the Royal Geographical Society, but who lost his outfit while en route for Thursday Island, through an accident to the vejßel m which it was being transported. October 4. The Ito'ning Post advocates the separation of No"them and Southern Queensland. Mr Finch Hatton, one of the members for South Lancashire m the House of Commons, who recently vi«ited the Australian colonies, has averted that the statesmen of Queensland have been robbing tbe colony for the purpose of filling their own pockets. The funeral of the Earl of Bhaftesbury was solemnised to-day at Westminster Abbey, but the interment took place at Dorset.
