THE SMALL BIRD NUISANCE.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE TIMARtJ HERALD. Sib,—Tho slip-ehod way m which this < nuisance is dealt with is my excuse for troubling you at present. I think the fact that the public bodies will eventually have to deal with tho question is sufficiently demonstrated by tho more settled districts doing it at present, and the sooner ull accept the responsibility tho better. At present some of the local bodies aro doing nil they can to destroy these pests j m other districts nothing is done, except eggs or birds are smuggled into other districts, and gold m a contraband Btyle. Sir, I think that the fact of some public bodies doing all they can to destroy the pests, and others doing nothing, points to a very unsatisfactory state of things, and shows more united action should be taken, as there is no doubt that birds abound, and for some districts to do nothing whilst others are doing all they can, looks to me like ono district, loafing on another. I would suggest the following mode of dealing with the question: —That the local bodies m charge of all districts corao to some mutual agreement to give a certain price for birds and eggs, and Bupply poisoned grain at a price or free ; the most smtablo time of the year for poisoning ; and m my opinion, the more liberal their terms were at present, the less the nuisanco would cost them m f uturo. I am, &c, S.S.
