(By Telegraph.) Auckland, Sept. 11. At a special meeting of tho Mercantile Marine Association, tho seizure of the barque Gazelle for smuggling on which the mastor was convicted, camo up for consideration. The following motion was agreed on : — "That the Secretary wire to tho Hon. Mr Tole asking him if there is time this session to introduce a Bill to alter tho law m the seizure of vessels for smuggling, throwing the onus on tho master only where the owner is not implicated, tho penalty on masters to be so severe that smuggling, such as m the Gazelle case would not be likely to occur again. Wellington, Sept. 11. The first section of the railway from Wellington to Paremata, a distanco of 16 miles, will bo opened on the 21st instant. At a meeting of representatives of Wellington Friendly Societies to-night the desirability of holding a monster demonstration at the Exhibition was affirmed. It was resolved to ask tho Executive Committee to bear a portion of the cost m getting tho demonstration up, and to ask the Government to reduce the fares on the railway to one-half of the present excursion rates. CuiiißTcnußcit, Sept. 11. At a sparsely ai tended meeting held tonight at Hulswell a resolution was unanimously passed expressing the opinion that tho Member for Heathcotc, Mr J. L. Coster, had disfranchised his constituency at a critical time, and seeking a pledge from him that ha will take his seat during next session of Parliament or resign m time for his successor to be elected. Tho Union Bowing Club has adopted a proposition made by the Star Club of Wellington, that any person may be elected a member without entrance fee if ho be tho bearer of a letter from any Rowing Club m New Zealand subscribing to tho rule, to the effect that ho has been an active member of the Club for tho previous twelve months and has paid all fees and fines.
